Why Self-Confidence is that Flaky Friend

Here's the thing. Self-confidence is never there when you need it the most. It's always easy to feel confident in yourself and your abilities when you're on a high, but when you're coming off a low and struggling, it's much harder.

Here's why: Self-confidence is a feeling, and in line with feelings it will fluctuate based on the context you're in, the people you're around, and whether you're doing well or not.

It's kind of like an unreliable friend who flakes on you whenever they feel like it.

šŸ‘‰So what can we channel instead?

SELF-COMPASSION

  • Self-compassion is showing up for yourself with kindness whenever you fail or make mistakes. Understanding without judgement.

It's saying 'hey, I know I messed up but I did what I was able to do at that point in time, and here's what I know now...'

It's recognising that you're human and that you'll fail, feel frustrated and fall short of expectations, but that this is just part of the human experience. It's not the end of the world and you can go again.

Instead of slamming yourself for staying in bed and watching Netflix, or not exercising or not doing as much work as you set out to do,Ā  Understand that we all make decisions we think we could have done differently. But here's the thing- if we could have done them differently in that moment, we would have.

āSo let go, be kind and ask yourself why you acted in a certain way. Did you need a break? Were you unmotivated? Were boundaries crossed and you snapped?

āAnd then figure out how to move forward, not because there's something wrong with you as you are, but because you care about yourself (&others)

āSince self-compassion is an action- you can channel it whenever you need. The easiest way to do this is to ask yourself: How can I be kind to myself right now? What would I say to my best friend if they were going through this?Ā
